I first fell in love with photography way back when film cameras were still around, while studying photography at Long Road in Cambridge. I had a old Pentax SP1000 and we used the darkroom to process all of our photos for our coursework and assignments. The enlargers they had only produced black and white photos. I think this is where my love for black and white photography started. Don’t get me wrong I love colour too, but if I had to chose black and white would win all day long. I absolutely loved being in the darkroom and it was great to be able to develop your own pictures. It’s definitely one thing I miss!
Fast forward to now and even with my wedding photography I still prefer the black and white look. They have a rawness and timeless feel to them. There are no distractions in the the photo, your eye is immediately drawn to the subject. Also when there is high contrast in images they tend to look even better in black and white.
Here are some of my favourite black and white images that I’ve taken in the last year. For more of my wedding work have a look on my blog.
